Letters of John T. to Mary before and after their marriage, letters from each to their daughter while at Monticello give a picture of life in Springfield, Ill. 1830-1870. Both discuss friends, neighbors, social activities, family and changes in Springfield. Father's also give much advice on her studies. Mother's give details of social activities, engagements, weddings, and mention frequently the Mattesons, the Edwards, Iles, Todds, and other prominent names. Occasional mention of the Lincolns. Also a few letters from John's father Robert, and his brothers David and Robert discuss family and politics. Letter from S.A. Douglas, 1839, re: belief that he won the election and offering methods of verifying outcome. One 13 page letter to Mary Todd Lincoln discussing work and future plans for the Lincoln Monument Association. Copies of three letters from Robert T. Lincoln re: Lincoln Monument Association. John Hay's letters to Mary Logan before their marriage. Her letters to him while in Washington, D.C. 1861 and 1862 visiting her sister, Sallie, Mrs. Ward Hill Lamon, mention the Lincolns often, meeting and talking with them.
